Taunton Racecourse's third meeting on January 29
HORSE racing punters suffered the frustration of having the richest meeting in the history of the Orchard Portman course that was due to take place on Saturday abandoned because of the heavy snowfall which covered the course.
Three inches of snow fell onto the covers at Taunton Racecourse on Thursday night and with snow still falling clerk of the course Michael Trickey had no alternative other than to call it off on Friday morning.
However there was some good news because Taunton has been judged the winner of the Racecourse Groundstaff Award for the best Jump Racecourse in 2012 in recognition of their achievements over the last year.
This is a significant achievement for Taunton because they were in competition with all 59 courses in England, Scotland and Wales.
In selecting the Orchard Portman course as the winning jump course the judging panel recognised the four year project undertaken by the team at Taunton Racecourse to widen the racing surface as well as substantial remedial work on their fences. In addition, it was noted that the team had conducted much work in preparing for the installation of an irrigation system in advance of Spring meetings at the racecourse.
Taunton hosts their third meeting this month on Tuesday, January 29, when the first of the seven races on the card is due off at 1.40pm.
