BURNHAM welcomed Shepton Mallet reserves and expected a tough encounter after the two teams met in similar conditions earlier in the season.

During the first 20 minutes it was their defence of James Cannard, Dave Bidgood, Russell Holley and Elliot Lamb that had the most to do but always looked comfortable especially as goalkeeper Will Lamb appeared at his best.

Simon Smith took a heavy knock to his knee and was unable to recover which saw the introduction of 16-year-old Nathan Bishop who had an immediate impact with some clever skills and link up play.

Ed Lamb and Craig Hirons started to control the middle of the park and Hirons in particular started to pull the strings with wide men Claude Bitton and Warren Whitfield.

After weathering the expected strong start from the visitors United were now starting to play some good football on an already heavy pitch. Cannard joined an attack from his fullback position and finished well from just inside the box to put United in front.

In the second half, United stepped up the pace and Bitton and Scott supported by Bishop were now starting to create really good chances and it was only time before Matt Scott scored his first and United's second.

Some great combination between Bitton and Scott saw the latter net his second and United's third to seal the win.

Manager Luke Hussey said: “Overall it was a satisfying performance, particularly as we had been so poor in our last performance. There was some real outstanding individual performances today but it was great to see the team spirit evident during a tough encounter.”

The team will travel to fry Club on Saturday for a 3pm kick-off.
