Cheddar too strong for Burnham

BURNHAM seconds lost to a strong Cheddar side on Saturday.
Two tries from Matt Love and a fine individual effort from Ben Gibb were in vain for the hosts, who were unable to tame their opponents’ attacking flair.
A long period of pressure led to Cheddar’s first score of the afternoon before their strong inside centre and speedy left wing exploited the home side defence and ran in another try.
This was the tale of a half in which the visitors capitalised on Burnham’s mistakes and racked the scoreboard up to 29 points as interval arrived.
Burnham’s only consolation of the half was an opportunist try by Matt Love, converted by Ryan Reynolds, to make the half-time score 29-7.
A more determined Burnham side started the second period with replacements Gibb and Chris Leigh, but the visitors started as they left off with pressure again paying off, crossing the line through their slick winger.
Cheddar were made to fight for every point, though, and if effort was calculated in points Burnham would have taken the lead, but their confidence was growing as they began to show cracks in Cheddar’s defence, and from a break up the left Gibb collected his own chip to touch down.
Cheddar were put under extreme pressure as the game progressed with crunching tackles by Leigh and Matt Glanville, and the pressure was rewarded when Love finished off a fine try, converted by Spellman.
Burnham 2nds face Hornets this Saturday, October 12.
