Wellington 12 Burnham 29
BURNHAM maintained their 100% league record with a clinical victory over Wellington on Saturday.
Tim Piper’s 19-point haul helped Burnham on their way, as he struck three penalties, a drop goal and a conversion, as well as crossing for the opening try.
Tries from Tom Chaffey and Alan House rounded off a satisfying afternoon for the league leaders.
Piper opened Burnham’s account with a well-struck penalty in the second minute after having been subjected to a brutal high tackle.
He added another just minutes later, before drilling over a drop goal following a succession of mauls. Just before the break, Blake stole a Wellington lineout close to their line and set up a powerful maul, which Tim Piper latched onto the back of to score and convert.
Burnham continued in the same vein in the second half and their formidable pack forced Wellington's front row to go up, allowing Piper to add to the tally.
Wellington refused to give in and were rewarded with a try through their winger.
One of Burnham’s strong points this season has been their defence and on this occasion they forced Wellington into spilling the ball.
After a series of hacks through, the ball eventually fell to Tom Chaffey who grounded for his debut first team try.
Again Wellington responded and a long breakout by the fullback culminated in a second try.
But Burnham are not to be denied this season and after securing a scrum on their own line, Spelman picked and popped to Pike who thumped his way towards the line.
He was halted just short, but Alan House was on hand to score a third and final try of the afternoon and keep Burnham top of the pile.
Burnham host Torquay Athletic on Saturday (October 26), Kick-Off 3pm.
