Weather wins again - Taunton & District League round-up
8:00am Wednesday 22nd January 2014 in Sport Latest
THE weather was the main winner once again in the Taunton & District Saturday League as heavy rain wiped out fixtures at every grass pitch in the league last weekend – leaving just three games played on the 3G Artificial pitch at The Castle School.
Friday night’s Rowbarton Cup clash saw Hamilton Athletic beat Bishops Lydeard 1-0 – and in the Somerset Intermediate Cup, Blagdon Hill thrashed Barwick 7-2 to book a place in the quarter-finals.
Pat Sherwood opened the scoring for Blagdon with the first two of his hat-trick, before Marcus Vaughan curled a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner for number three.
Vaughan added his second and Blagdon’s fourth with a volley from close range, before Sherwood sealed the match ball with his third. Andy Butler added a sixth and Keith Graddon made it seven.
Staplegrove Colts ran out 3-1 winners against Middlezoy Athletic in the Seward Cup thanks to goals from Kurtis Selway, Gary Bishop and Rob Chambers.
But they had to come from behind after Sam Murray had fired Zoy into the lead when he pounced on a loose ball to give replacement keeper Stuart Bangs no chance.
Grove pushed hard for the equaliser as the weather deteriorated, and they were rewarded when full-back Spencer Turnbull crossed for Kurtis Selway to bury from close range.
Middlezoy thought they had retaken the lead, but Bangs denied them with a brilliant save. Player-manager Gary Bishop then showed his strikers how to do it with a 25-yard rocket into the bottom corner to give Grove a 2-1 lead.
Grove ensured they would be in the hat for the next round when Rob Chambers pounced on a long ball to volley home a third and seal the victory.
