Foy and Jones take Percy Underwood trophy at Brean Golf Club
2:00pm Tuesday 21st January 2014 in Sport Latest
BREAN Golf Club fought off the wet weather on Sunday January 19) as the Percy Underwood Trophy went ahead as planned despite the deluge of rain that fell in the previous 24 hours.
The course was very wet underfoot as was to be expected but the 19 pairs set about the task of securing the silverware in the Foursomes Stableford competition.
On a bright sunny morning the winning duo were Graham Foy and Steve Jones with an excellent score of 44 points.
They won by three from Steve's brother Paul and his partner Mo Sanders.
The only other pair to top 40 points in Roger Vaughan and Barry Fisher took third spot.
ON a dreadful day of rain not many players ventured out onto the course for the Winter League round on Saturday (January 18). Despite the wet weather only one temporary green was in use as the Brean drainage again worked well.
Stewart Garrett obviously enjoyed the wet weather as he totalled up a very impressive 36 points including the only two of the day.
The in-form Gordy Wheelaghan was second with just 25, which shows just how tough the conditions were. An added bonus for Garrett was that it was also a two's rollover so his birdie at the second meant his winnings were topped up nicely for his mornings work.
MIKE Allen added victory in the January Seniors Stableford to his recent Medal win to make him the man to beat in the Seniors events at present.
He carded 39 points to hold a one point advantage over Pete Douglas in second place.
Douglas is also in good form and if it wasn't for Allen would have completed the January double but instead ended up as the bridesmaid twice.
Tony Roper was the third placed finisher with 37 points being the only other competitor to beat their handicap.
BREAN Head Professional Andrew March enjoyed a top 5 finish in the Gloucester and Somerset PGA Medal at Burnham and Berrow GC last week.
Returning to the venue he worked at for 12 years he shot a five over par 76 on a difficult day for scoring to share fifth place, five strokes behind winner David Dixon from Enmore Park.
