Burnham-on-Sea 31, Wellington 12

BURNHAM got back to winning ways with an impressive bonus point victory over Wellington on Saturday.

Tries from Elisi Vunipola, Stuart Blake (2) and Ollie Streeter fired Burnham to an important win.

With the wind and rain howling across the pitch, Burnham played against the elements for the first half and worked hard to keep Wellington at bay for the first 20 minutes.

Eventually, some strong and disciplined mauling offered the chance to release Elisi Vunipola and he barrelled his way over for the opening score.

But Wellington were not to be denied and recorded two tries before half-time, with some enterprising mauling to create an overlap in the corner for the first and some fortuitous hacking on to score under the posts for the second.

The sides went into the break at 7-12 and, after a lengthy break because of injury, Burnham started the second half in considerably more determined mood.

After a series of scrums, Stuart Blake was finally driven over to claim the try – Chaffey converted.

Chaffey added a penalty soon after, before Muskett offloaded to Ollie Streeter to canter in untouched.

Chaffey added the extras again to give Burnham a 24-12 lead – and Blake added his second of the afternoon following another powerful scrum.

Chaffey converted to record a 100% kicking record as Burnham proved they can step a gear when they need to.

  • Burnham are away to Torquay Athletic on Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm.
