THE ANNUAL Brean Golf Club Presentation Night was hosted last Friday evening by Club President Richard House in Dickies at the Leisure Park.

The event was well attended by the members who collected their awards for their successes on the golf course during 2013.

The occasion also marked the final duties of captaincy for Brian Read and his last task was to hand over a cheque to Breakthrough Breast Cancer, his nominated Captain's Charity.

As always the Brean Members did exceptionally well and raised just over £4,000 for the cause.

Special mention was made to Bar Manager Les Byrne who boosted that fund greatly with his half marathon exploits during the year.

John Piper was on hand to receive the cheque and commented that ' the amount raised took the total fundraising achieved by the local branch to just over £400,000 in the 17 years since it had been set up.'

He went on to thank the club for their efforts and said the money would be put to good use in the quest to beat Breast Cancer in Somerset.'

Eamonn Wynne was left almost speechless when he was awarded the Club Person of the Year award at the Presentation Night.

He received it in recognition of his continued support of almost all of the events that the club run, many of which he has helped to setup and organise.

Tom Broom has put many an hour of practice into his golf in the past 12 months and he has often seen the fruits of his labour as his handicap has steadily reduced to being currently on the verge of single figures.

He was named the 'Most Improved Golfer of 2013' and could quite easily being challenging for the honour again in 2014 as he chases his cousin and Club Champion Dan.

RON Vine is the 2013/14 Winter League Champion at Brean.

He secured the title by virtue of his runner up finish with 37 points on Finals Day being added to his 3 bonus points he gained from the qualifying table.

John Cullinan was the winner of the Stableford but he had been unable to play in enough qualifying rounds to break into the top 20 who contested the main final.

Vine had enjoyed some consistent Winter scores to be in third place in qualifying and produced another steady score when it mattered most.

The leading qualifier Richard Triscott didn't enjoy the best of days and eventually ended up 5th overall. Ahead of him were Graham Exton in 4th and the countback for second was shaded by Dave Bradley thanks to his better Finals Day score over Gordy Wheelaghan.

In a close and enjoyable game the Brean Mixed team just lost to their Taunton Vale counterparts on Sunday afternoon.

Playing away at the course near Creech St Michael the result hinged on the final game left on the course which eventually went the way of the hosts leaving the overall match score as 4 games to 3.

The Brean Seniors had a comfortable win in their first round tie of the Seniors Somerset Bowl early last week also at Taunton Vale. A 4-1 victory over their Wincanton counterparts sees them move onto the second round of the event.
