THE Somerset Rebels rounded out their three-match Northern Tour with a ten point win away at Glasgow, giving the Rebels the maximum four league points to add to the point they earned at Berwick the previous night.

A Glasgow 5-1 in heat 10 brought the home side back to within 4 of the Rebels, but three 4-2 heat advantages over the course of the next 4 heats was sufficient to give Somerset the meeting victory with a heat to spare, the only factor to be determined as the riders came to the tapes for heat 15 was whether the Rebels would be going back home with three or four league points to their name.

The first attempt to run the final race saw Somerset’s Brady Kurtz excluded after coming to grief on the 2nd bend to leave Nick Morris as the Rebels sole representative in the re-run.

But Morris made light of any pressure he may have been feeling as he passed Wölbert on the back straight of the opening lap, he then going on to take the race win which gave Somerset the meeting victory 51-41 and with it those precious 4 league points, it also being Somerset’s biggest ever away win over Glasgow.

“This was a great team performance in what were tricky conditions,” said a delighted Garry May, the Somerset team manager afterwards, “All the boys had an excellent afternoon, led by Olly and his maximum.”

“There was some terrific racing out there today, and that is a credit to both teams, but we were determined beforehand that we wanted to be heading back home with a win under our belts, and that is just what we did…..it’ll certainly make the long journey home seem a whole lot shorter.”

Somerset’s win took them back to the top of the Premier League table, they holding on to top spot on race-points difference from Edinburgh who drew at Newcastle 42-all in a rain truncated meeting later in the evening.
