THE second annual Somerset Rebels Golf Day held last Friday at Brean Golf Club proved to be another great success as it raised valuable funds to help with the ongoing costs of the club's Air Fence - which is required to allow racing to continue at the Oaktree Arena, home to the Somerset Rebels.

Brean's PGA Professional & Director of Golf Andrew March - who is a longstanding fan of the shale sport, and his assistant Jordan Jones, who used to work at the Oaktree venue - were again the driving forces behind the event.

It was very well supported with almost 70 golfers taking part and as at the inaugural staging 12 months earlier, the weather was glorious and with the Brean course in excellent condition again for the team event which saw former riders, club officials and many fans taking part.

A couple of Brean member's teams used their local knowledge to great effect as they secured the leading two positions with the winning quartet containing 75% of last year's winning team.

Andy Thomas had to drop out last year at the last minute due to an injury but he returned this year to help defend the title and along with Stuart Wills, Martyn Cahill and Paul McLanaghan, which they did with 88 points.

Second place went to a team led by Brean Club Captain Paul Jones with 86 points.

He was joined by his brother Steve, Pete Barton and Phil Hodgson.

Rebels' Skipper Olly Allen was due to play in the club sponsors team but a recent speedway injury unfortunately prevented him from taking his place.

A replacement was found and Rob Nigh from Somerset team sponsors, Cases Ltd, Tony Manlow, Mark Blackwell and Jordan Blackwell helped themselves to third place on 85 points.

Allen did make an appearance though, taking time out of his pre-meeting preparations to present the prizes to the winners.

Following the Rebels victory a speedway memorabilia auction was conducted in the clubhouse by the Great Britain and Swindon team manager Alun Rossiter which boosted the funds somewhat making the final total raised on the day for the Air Fence to just over the £2,000 mark.

“Once again Andrew and Jordan organised a great event which raised valuable funds towards our air-fence fund,” said Somerset Rebels promoter Debbie Hancock, “the event was blessed with glorious weather, and everyone had a great day, firstly at the actual golf and then again back here at the Oaktree Arena in the afternoon and evening.”

“I would like to thank Andrew and Jordan for all their hard work in arranging the event and to everyone who took part as well as those people who bought items in the auction.”

“It may only have been the 2nd year of the event, but it has already become an integral part of the Somerset Rebels calendar and long may it continue.”
