MIKE Chaloner and Vince Ford were the winning duo in the Charity Open held in aid of CLAPA, the Cleft Lip and Palate Association, on Saturday at Brean.

They scored 51 points in the betterball stableford, which saw both players scores being counted on the par three holes, to win by a single point. Runners up were Simon Baunton and Tom Marshfield who led the way for much of the day with their 50 point card only to be pipped late on by Chaloner and Ford.

Martyn Cahill and Nigel Hodges claimed third on 49 points and they held a healthy advantage over the fourth placed pair of four points.

That fourth and final prize was decided on a countback with Jeff Read and Phil Hodgson just shading it on the back nine from Barrie Tucker and Ian Adams.

The charity for the day, CLAPA, is one that is very close to Director of Golf Andrew March's heart as his son Logan was born, just under two years ago now, with the condition.

Having had two surgeries in his first year Logan is now looking very different to how he did went he was born which is testament to the great work the South West Cleft team (the surgical side) and the local Bristol Branch of CLAPA do.

Andrew will be passing the £200 that was raised on the day to them which will help them carry on the various support mechanisms they have in place to support both the children and their families affected by Cleft.

Bristolian duo Steve Bateman and Tony Groves had the best scores of the day on their way to winning their respective Divisions in the September Monthly Stableford.

Bateman won Division One with 39 points to beat Roger Vaughan by two.

Groves won the third flight but only enjoyed a one point winning margin over Rich Lambert.

The second Division winner probably had the biggest smile on his face at the club, and that was even before he played! Welshman Tony Richards did just what his country's rugby team did the previous evening against England and won as he took Division Two with 36 points by two from CJ Organ.

Barrie Yearsley won a back nine countback to win the Seniors September Medal.

He scored a nett 71 in the difficult conditions which was matched by late starter Chris Stephens but Yearsley had the better inward nine to take victory.

Third place went to Ken Ponter on nett 72.

Seniors Captain Elect Barry Fisher secured the Chairman's Cup with a 35 point stableford score on a blustery and occasionally wet Thursday morning.

No one in the field matched their handicap and although Fisher probably should of done but he failed to score on the final hole.

In the end it didn't stop him winning as he was one clear of Barrie Yearsley, who just failed to complete the 'double' for the week after his win two days earlier. Third spot also on 34 went to Roger Phillips.

Brian Read led his Avalon League team into their final battle of the year as they competed in the League's Champion of Champions Finals Day at Tall Pines Golf club.

Following their success in winning Division Six this summer they competed in a betterball stableford format over the course next to Bristol International Airport.

They ended up in sixth position out of the seven teams playing but some consolation was the team they did beat happened to be Division Two winners and near neighbours Burnham & Berrow.
