GORDY Wheelaghan blew the field away on the opening day of this annual Christmas event at Brean Golf Club.

He scorched around the course and only narrowly missed out on reaching a very rare half century of stableford points.

Try as they might no one could get close to that score as ground conditions became heavier and heavier, as the days passed thanks to the almost constant rain.

The runners up score was also produced on that opening day with club captain Stuart Wills producing a sub-par gross 68, which was bogey free until he dropped a shot at the penultimate hole, to rack up a very tidy 43 points.

With many other courses finding themselves closed over the holidays it saw plenty of visitors getting involved as they stretched their legs after their Christmas over indulgences.

Third place went to Enmore Park's Neil Whisler with a 42 point card ahead of a pair of Brean members on 40.

They required a back nine countback to separate them with Jerry Brueford taking fourth ahead of Tony Richards in fifth.

Two more Enmore members filled the final two spots and they also needed the countback rules to decide the finishing order.

Somerset Cricket Club's deputy head groundsman, Rob Hake took sixth place ahead of Steve Woodley in seventh after they both totalled 39 stableford points.

Dan Broom kept the family name at the top of the Division One leaderboards as he followed up his December Stableford win, and his cousin Tom's win in the December Medal, by claiming the January Medal.

He also collected the New Year’s Trophy for his nett 67 which was five better than Murray Parsons in some heavy conditions.

Division Two had the closest finish of the day with the in-form Adam Cox matching Byron Lismore's nett 68.

Cox had the better back nine though to take the win.

The Deacon Trophy is awarded to the best score from the Division Three players.

Steve Martin was the recipient of this silverware with his nett 74.

n STEVE Dacosta was the toast of Enmore Park Golf Club on Sunday, when he had a hole-in-one at the 15th hole.

This was Dacosta's third hole-in-one.
