Somerset Division Two West

Highbridge Town 1 Burnham United Reserves 0

HIGHBRIDGE Town took the spoils from a tense local derby played at the Recreation ground on Bank Holiday Monday.

In a tense atmosphere, it was a first half penalty that decided matters, with Matt Scott working his way past the two Burnham players and being hauled down, before picking himself up and slotting away the spot-kick on 30 minutes.

It remained 1-0 until the end of the half, before a bad tempered second half saw two players dismissed, one from each side, and there was very little in the way of chances, with Town’s Will Bailey going close with a header over the bar and Scott turning well, but scuffing his strike at goal.

Highbridge manager Matt Pitt said: “I thought we were by far the better side, but all credit to Burnham who defended so doggedly in the first half and threw their bodies in front of the ball to stop strikes at goal.

“That was our third game in five days and it really showed in our performance I feel, but if we win while playing poorly I will take that and it shows signs of a good side.

“We have now given ourselves every chance of winning this league with it in our own hands again now, we will build and get stronger going forward but I most certainly feel this is our year to clear up.”

GOALS from Matt Scott, Simon Fouracres and Scott Harman saw Highbridge fight back from a goal down to beat Ashton and Backwell 3-2 on Saturday.
