Somerset County League Division 1W
Burnham United 5, Combe St Nicholas 1

BURNHAM continued their recent impressive form with a convincing 5-1 win against Combe St Nicholas.

Burnham started the game brightly with all the play in the Combe half, resulting in numerous corners.

However it was the visitors who took the lead after 25 minutes against the run of play.

Efforts from Matt Scott, Mike Stevens and Joe Selway were Burnham’s response looking for the equaliser, but it was a frustrating first half for the Seasiders.

In the second half that frustration was short-lived when, two minutes after the restart, they equalised through Scott’s right foot, as he scored from a tight angle, the shot going in off the post.

Then, on 65 minutes, Scott was fouled in the box and he coolly dispatched the penalty, putting Burnham 2-1 up.

Minutes later Burnham scored their third, with a fantastic 25-yard screamer by Selway, which the crowd watching will remember for a long time.

Burnham were now playing with lots of confidence and with 10 minutes remaining Elliot Lamb put Stevens through to grab a fourth goal with a left-foot strike.

Burnham weren’t finished there, and the final goal was scored by the impressive Paul Grant, heading in from a corner, wrapping up a good win.

The game was also marked by the first team debut for 16-year-old Cain Smith, who came on as a second-half substitute, demonstrating a bright future for him and the club.
