Somerset County League Division 1W
Burnham United 1, Somerton Town 1

BURNHAM United fought back from a goal down and a man down to take a point at home to Somerton.

The hosts welcomed back Olly Morris, recently re-signed from Bridgwater Town, and Jordie Eldridge was also back in action after an injury lay-off.

The team flew out the traps and were clearly determined to put the disappointing result from last week – losing 2-1 to Cleeve West Town – behind them.

Burnham dominated early on and looked more likely to open the scoring, with Ed Lamb’s stunning 30-yard shot forcing a scrambling save.

But Burnham suffered a setback in the 40th minute, when Ben Cherry was sent off for a high challenge.

The situation worsened minutes later as Somerton took the lead from a corner from the left which was headed home, totally against the run of play.

With grit and hard work Burnham continued to dominate the game straight from the restart, pressing Somerton back.

They were rewarded on 65 minutes when Eldridge put Matt Scott away to score from a tight angle.

Burnham were unlucky not to take all three points when, with just minutes remaining, Scott headed narrowly over from a Finley Wilkinson free-kick.
