Huntspill & District 293-5 beat Lympsham & Belvedere 177 by 116 runs

BOTTOM side Huntspill & District sprung a surprise on Saturday, beating second-placed Lympsham & Belvedere by 116 runs in the local derby.

Callum Neate and Jack Luff both bowled well without luck early on, but both struck in quick succession as Luff bowled Sam Lilycrop (16) and Neate had Randall (22) caught by Mike Hosey.

Thomas Garner and Matt Cavill played positively and put together an excellent partnership, with Garner progressing to 83 before edging to Dave Luff at gully.

Cavill continued to hit boundaries before he fell for 92, bowled by the returning J Luff (2-43), but Matt Osmant (37) and Matt Counsell (14) continued the onslaught as Huntspill amassed 293-5.

In reply, Lympsham and Belvedere looked to build the platform required for a big run chase as Neil Chadwick and Mike Hosey started positively, but the introduction of Shaun Lismore early on proved effective as Chadwick edged to Counsell at gully for 21.

Jack Luff (24) and Hosey (31) continued to push the scoring rate, but both fell in quick succession and wickets fell at regular intervals as Huntspill stayed in control of the game.

Lismore ended with 3-33 from nine overs, with Dean Adams (3-10) cleaning up the tail as Lympsham were bowled out for 177, comfortably short of the target.

Lympsham face table-topping Trull on Saturday, while Huntspill - who now have consecutive wins under their belt - host Castle Cary.

ANDY Ashfold struck an unbeaten 93 as Burnham 2nds strolled to a 78-run victory at Winscombe 2nds in Division 6N of the Shrubbery Hotel Somerset League.

The opener batted throughout the away side’s 40 overs and was well supported by P. Gaylard (43) and Ed Lewis (65) as Burnham ended their innings on 240-2.

Winscombe’s reply included 71 from C. Fraser, but only two of his teammates made it into double figures and five players did not trouble the scorers as they were dismissed for 162.

Tom McCollum led the way for Burnham with 3-23 from his eight overs, with the rest of the wickets shared between Jim Birkett (2-24), L. Gowan (3-60) and B. Diver (1-8).

Wedmore’s batting card had an upside-down look about it as they were bowled out for 136 at Temple Cloud 2nds.

Both openers fell for ducks and the top order were bailed out by the tail, with numbers eight and nine - D. Haining (20) and S. Blackburn (39) respectively - the chief contributors.

Temple Cloud opener S. White then hit an unbeaten 62 in response as his side passed the target for the loss of just three wickets.

Elsewhere in the division, East Huntspill were comfortably beaten by Glastonbury 2nds.

M. Mitchell (45) impressed with the bat for East Huntspill, but no other player passed 11 as they were dismissed for just 112.

Glastonbury’s batsmen had no such trouble, making their way to 113-2 with only N. Harding (1-15) and K. Watts (1-25) among the wickets for Wedmore.

Huntspill & District 2nds benefited from some generous Wells 2nds bowling as they completed a seven-wicket win in Division 7N.

Chasing 188 to win, C. Le Frere hit an unbeaten 46 and there were 65 Extras as Huntspill got there for the loss of three wickets.

T. Lewis made 54 for Mark, but no other batsman made it past 20 as they were bowled out for 135 against Uphill Castle Cavaliers.

T. Oultram’s 59 not out then helped Uphill to an eight-wicket victory.

Lympsham & Belvedere 2nds’ last-wicket pair shone against Wedmore 2nds, with Paul Davis (24*) and Julian Froud (22*) the top scorers in their side’s 175-9.

Luke Hawthorne starred with 5-31 for Wedmore, whose other bowlers were not so accurate as Lympsham benefited from 52 Extras, 30 of which were wides.

Wicketkeeper T. Fozard top scored with 31 in Wedmore’s chase, which was never truly threatening and finished on 92 all out.

The wickets were shared around Lympsham’s bowlers, each of whom took at least one wicket.
