THE fifth annual Somerset Rebels Golf Day took place on Friday at Brean Golf Club, with a record entry of 19 teams taking part.

The format of Texas Scramble was again adopted, and teams travelled from far and wide to take part in the unique day, which combines a competitive round of golf followed by the opportunity to view a top class speedway meeting in the evening.

The Rebels’ opposition for the evening, the Belle Vue Aces from Manchester, entered a team and they thoroughly enjoyed the day, if not the speedway result come 10pm!

Teams taking part for the first time dominated the leading two places, with a team from Bridgwater Cricket Club called the Bridgy Bogey Men being declared the winners with a nett score of 53.1.

Brothers Matt and Ed Habberfield were joined by Ally Witts and Tom Pople in the winning quartet, who finished 0.8 ahead of the second-placed team.

In second were a family team named Pirates Fore Tim, consisting of Rob, Jay, Steve and Matt Greatley.

Third place went to the Jones Bros Decorators foursome, who have been ever-present in each of the five stagings and often finishing around the top of the leaderboard.

Brean members Paul and Steve Jones, Les Clutterbuck and Neil Barker made up the team which relegated their club professional and event organiser Andrew March’s team back into fourth.

March enlisted the help of Rebels’ Aussie reserve Jake Allen along with Ian Slater and Mikey Brueford to return a respectable nett 56.6 and take the final prize.

The day was set up back in 2013 to raise money for the Air Fence that was required by the speedway club to allow racing to continue at the venue.

With that now paid for, the day continues to help with the ongoing costs that accompany the air fence and as well as other ‘projects’ to help develop the facilities at the stadium for spectators and riders alike.

The total raised this year was just under £1,250, and that took to running total for the golf day through the £10,000 barrier, which is a great effort from all those involved.

ENMORE sprung a surprise with a significant 4-1 win against Oake Manor B in Division 3 of the Avalon League on Sunday.

Oake Manor were top of the table going into the match with Enmore bottom, but the strugglers played superbly to claim victory.

In Division 1 of the club medal on Saturday, Patrick Vearncombe (nett 69) was first on countback, with Ben Filler second and Russell Peck third (both 69).

Christopher Sealey’s 69 picked up the Division 2 award with Russell Cross (71) second and Adrian Ley (72) third.

In Division 3, David Morgan (70) was first, Owen Baker (73) second on countback from Richard Tizzard.

Enmore Park Seniors ended July with a visit to the Taunton & Pickeridge club perched high on the Blackdown Hills.

Both teams had to battle the unseasonal elements but, in the end, the hosts were comprehensive winners 6-2.

Enmore’s only outright winning pair was Mike Lerry with partner Jim Potticary with a fine 4&3 score.

Two groups rescued a half-point - Steve Lukins with Roger Anniss (from four down) and Chris Willsteed with Peter Attwood.

The next day saw a new month but, unfortunately, similar weather as Enmore hosted the seniors of the Lyme Regis club.

In a closely-contested match, captain David Pascoe was on the edge of his seat waiting for the final pair to appear on the 18th green with his team needing a win to secure a share of the spoils.

He need not have worried as Keith Calvert with Roger Anniss had long before secured an impressive 8&7 win, thus leaving the match all square at four games each.

Other Enmore winners were Mike Perry with Ray Lukeski (4&3), captain Pascoe with Tim Smith (3&2) and Jim Smith with Graham Pain (3&1).

Vice-captain Graham Pain won a bottle of wine at each match by winning the nearest the pin prize.

The Lady Captain’s Day play was reduced to nine holes by the weather.

Joan Davey, Gwen Cavill and Ruth Maclennan triumphed with 38 points, winning by three points.

Jamie Scott won the Club Stableford with a stellar 42 points, Simon Cornish was second with 41, and Callum Tompkins finished third with 40.
