Division 1 West
Burnham United 7, Congresbury 1

BURNHAM started their season with a comprehensive 7-1 win over Congresbury, as Ben Cherry scored a hat-trick.

Naming a strong line-up, Burnham were 2-0 up inside the first 10 minutes.

The opener was scored by Ben Cherry, followed by an Elliot Lamb penalty.

Against the run of play Congresbury pulled a goal back in the 20th minute from a long-distance shot out of nothing.

However, Burnham upped their game, scoring twice more before half time, with goals from Jordie Eldridge and another for Cherry.

Burnham remained in control throughout the second half, and on the hour Charlie Harding put the ball over the top for Joe Selway to run onto and finish.

Cherry completed his well-deserved hat-trick three minutes later from an Elliot Lamb assist, and Cherry then turned provider 10 minutes from time, crossing from the left for Warren Mylum to head home.

Manager Steve Hainsby said: "Our pre-season has gone really well and the team were eager to get going in the league.

"I was please to give Burnham first team debuts to Finlay Paul, Harry Penfold, Ben Gates and 16-year-old Louie Jones.

"The season will be long, but I am happy we have started brightly."
