THERE was a full field at Enmore, raising funds for the Enmore Captain’s Charity Day.

With the competition being the best two scores to count out of four, winners were Justin Hooper, Doug Read, Colin Scobie and Richard Neal with 93 points.

Second, with 92, were Paul Martin, Darren Cross, Russel Peck and Chris Sealey, and third were captain Neil Whisler, President Brian Puddy, guest Russell Osman and Pete Davis, with 91 points.

The captain would like to thank everyone involved, competitors and those supporting the Day and Evening, raising money for two great organisations.

Tom Canavan won best nett in Enmore’s Junior Open 82-16-66 and has reduced his handicap to 14.

While many of Enmore Park’s senior squad were away on their annual ‘training camp’ in Cornwall, their stalwart colleagues entertained the seniors from the Honiton club.

It turned out to be a welcome home victory for captain David Pascoe’s team by 4-2.

Enmore’s winning pairs were Mike Rossiter with Doug Read (4&2), Tony Pomeroy with Jim Smith (5&4), captain Pascoe with Keith Calvert (4&3) and Chris Willsteed with David Comely (3&2).

Enmore also won their most recent Avalon League match, against Stockwood Vale.

Gary Cook and Paul Coleman won on the last hole, while Ryan Brewer and Danny Crook, Jack Dray and Steve James, and Tim Jones and Craig Wright won comfortably.

Andy Evans and Adrian Tew were two down with two to play, only for Evans to birdie the final two holes to get the half point. That meant victory for Enmore, 4½-½.

A FINAL hole eagle eventually secured victory in a low-scoring Margaret Copp Chalice Scramble at Brean on Sunday.

The quartet of Dan Reason, Matt Shaw, Les Clutterbuck and Dan Broom were the ones who sunk the telling blow to win the Trophy by just 0.4 of a shot and prevent a successful defence of it by the 2016 winners.

A couple of late lip-outs cost Stuart Wills, Andy Thomas, Martyn Cahill and Paul McLanaghan the chance of a repeat win as they finished on 54.6 as opposed to the winners’ 56.2.

Mel Brown, Simon Baunton, Chris Fairchild and Club Captain Dave Porter were third on 55.9.

A Jenkins double was achieved in the August Monthly Stableford the previous day as brothers Leighton and Mark both scored wins in their respective divisions.

Leighton was the Division One victor with a 41-point score, three clear of Dan Broom and four clear of Club Champion Matt Shaw.

Mark’s 37 was best in Division Two and completed the double win for the Welshmen. Simon Baunton was the runner-up on 35 ahead of Roy Fletcher on 34.

The only other player to break through the 40-point barrier came in the form of Steve Martin in Division Three.

He matched the 41 points score of Leighton Jenkins on his way to a three-point win over Dan Reason. Roger Phillips was third with 35.

More than 30 Brean Seniors travelled across Somerset to play in their annual Away Day event, which took place at Orchardleigh last Monday.

John Hale was a late stand-in for Bob Hurrell, who was ill, and he made the most of the opportunity as he collected the Ron Taylor Trophy for the best Seniors score with his 35 points.

John Cranley won a four-way card countback on 32 to take third.

David Hunter followed up his recent win in the Phil Fudge Trophy by adding another piece of silverware to his growing collection the following day.

He won the over-65s Shield with a score of 40, three points ahead of Pete Douglas, with Barrie Tucker one point further back on 36.

The opening round of the Seniors Eclectic competition took place on Thursday and Ron Edmondson led the way.

He had both the lowest gross and nett scores with his gross 71 playing off of his handicap.

Burnham and Highbridge Weekly News:

TRIUMPH: Ashley Mansell receives the trophies from Burnham and Berrow captain Peter Amos.

BURNHAM & Berrow Golf Club hosted the PGA West Region Championship last week, with Ashley Mansell claiming victory and £1,450.

Holding a one-shot overnight lead, Mansell mastered the second day’s rain and wind to extend his lead, triumphing with rounds of 67 and 70.

The 26-year-old Clevedon assistant finished four shots clear of Paul Hendriksen (Ivybridge), Sion Bebb (Morlais Castle) and Mark Searle (High Post).

Mansell said: “I am ecstatic about my first Order of Merit win - this is the greatest moment of my professional career.

“It has been an outstanding season since I won the Gloucester and Somerset PGA championship and order of merit in May.

“Conditions were tough today especially on the outward nine into the wind.

“I didn’t make any severe mistakes, putted well and always felt in control.”

Former Welsh international Martin Stimson (Ashburnham), who is 50 in January, won the seniors’ title, finishing 13th overall.

Home favourite George Ryall led after the first round but was plagued by back trouble and faded.

Kate Rule (Mullion) became the women’s champion.
