Weston St John 2, Burnham Utd 3

BURNHAM United went into Saturday’s league game away at Weston St John with a point to prove after last week’s disappointing defeat at Combe St Nicholas.

On a heavy pitch, the first action of the half was after 10 minutes, when a Weston striker was given a straight red for striking out.

However, soon after, Weston took the lead with a well-taken goal.

Burnham finished the half stronger of the teams but couldn’t get level by half time.

It took three minutes of the second half to level the game, though, a right-footed strike from Jordie Eldridge notching his 11th goal of the season.

On the hour, debutant Jamie Merrick replaced the hard-working Harrison Kidner and, seconds later, scored with his first touch in a Burnham shirt.

Unfortunately, 10 minutes from time, Weston equalised with a wicked deflection, giving keeper Ashley Harrison no chance.

Burnham thought they had lost the opportunity to move up to third in the table but, with a minute of normal time remaining, Joe Selway got the ball on the left and sweetly struck home to give Burnham all three points.

Burnham Utd Reserves were without a fixture, while Burnham A's match at Congresbury was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Weston Celtic 1, Burnham Utd B 1

BURNHAM had a tricky fixture at Weston Celtic.

Low level sun and a boggy pitch made for a really tough first half and Burnham found themselves one goal behind at half time.

A much-improved second half saw manager Jeff Smith put James Reddish through on goal, who coolly slotted home.

Despite several late chances, Burnham couldn’t find the winner.
