JOHN Hale won the Seniors April Stableford at Brean Golf Club with a score of 40 points on Thursday morning.

In recent weeks he has regularly featured at the top end of leaderboards and the work he has put in on his game over the winter helped him to top the scorecharts this time.

His winning margin in Division 2 was a mammoth eight points from Bob Toller, who couldn’t quite add the Stableford win to his Medal success of last week.

Steve Bentley took third on 30.

In Division 1, Ron Edmondson collected the spoils in the top flight.

Despite bemoaning a misbehaving putter he still returned a very respectable 37 points to head home Barrie Tucker by one, and end two clear of third-placed Pete Douglas.

Linda Edmondson tasted victory for the second week running as she added the April Stableford to her recent Lady Secretary Shanker win, making it an Edmondson double on the day.

She carded a superb 36 points to win by four from the exact same person she relegated to the runners-up spot seven days earlier, Lyn Bird!

Ladies chairperson Suzanne Hatfield took third and also claimed the twos pot with her birdie at the 17th.

Matt Shaw’s Avalon League Division 3 side followed up their home victory of last week with a win in their opening away fixture of the season.

They defeated the Taunton-based side by three games to two to pick up some valuable early season league points.

The second game of the weekend was a game too far for the Brean team, though, as they went down to a home defeat to the Mendip Golf Club.

They lost by 3.5 games to 1.5 with ‘debutant’ John Cullinan and Phil Hodgson collecting their win.

Captain Shaw and another debutant, Jeff Read, got the half point.

Jeff Read is the early leader in the 2018 Super Series as he won the opening round with a superb 45-point return.

The result saw his handicap reduced by two as he ended the day six points clear of the field with Barry Brindley and Kevin Davies heading the chasing pack on 39.

Brindley had the better back nine to take second ahead of Davies.

Tony Higgins won Sunday’s Pro Shop Bogey competition as he beat the course by five.

On a damp morning he headed home Pro Shop Assistant Jordan Hills by two.

Hills had threatened to topple Higgins but a couple of late slips left him as the runner-up.

Third place went to Byron Lismore on +1.

ENMORE Park Seniors were due to have three matches in the first week of the season.

The first fixture at Tiverton was postponed due to the waterlogged condition of the course, as was the third match at home to Minehead.

The second fixture at Churston, despite being in doubt, was played on what turned out to be a nice day.

Captain Graham Pain and his partner Dave Pascoe led from the front, winning the opening game.

The home side won the next four fixtures before victories by Pete Scott and Paul Waplington (1 up) and Mike Sullivan with Jess Lawrence (2 and 1) brought some respectability to the final result, which ended 5-3 to the home side.

Enmore’s Avalon League team got off to a great start with a 3½-1½ win at Burnham and Berrow.

Enmore’s Auction of Promises, which has been running online for five weeks, culminated in a Live Auction of selected bids on Sunday, April 8, with club professional Nigel Wixon (above right) acting as auctioneer.

The final amount raised was £906, almost double the target set by organisers Steve Darch (events manager) and Jackie Bull (ladies captain).

The proceeds will be split between the ladies captain’s charities – Breast Cancer Now and S.U.R.E.
