Impressive results for young Burnham swimmers


BURNHAM-ON-SEA Swimming Club held a Four Seasons Gala at Burnham Swim and Sports Academy on Saturday – a special day for nine to 12-year-olds.

It is designed to show the swimmers what galas are all about, including the rules and regulations, and also helps them see why training is important.

There were 17 individual best times and 16 first places.

The 12 and under boys and girls did well, with Luke Perrin having a best time in the individual medley, Scott Jenkins a best time in the 50m freestyle, Alex Plume a best time in the 50m butterfly and Rueben Hembrough a best time and first place in the 50m breaststroke.

They all swam in the freestyle relay and had first place.

Shannon Vickery had a best time in the individual medley.

In the 11 and under boys and girls, Charlie Attwood had a best time and first place in the 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly and first place in the 50m breaststroke.

Megan Manley had a best time in the 50m backstroke and a best time and first place in the 50m breaststroke.

The medley team and freestyle team came first.

The swimmers were Rachel Buxton, Megan Manley, Jessica Lavis and Abbie Connick.

In the ten and under boys and girls, Morgan Rose had a best time and first place in the 25m freestyle and first place in the 25m butterfly while William Lupton a best time and first place in the 25m backstroke.

The freestyle and medley teams both had first place. The swimmers were William Lupton, Oliver Morris, Morgan Rose and Nathan Clarke.

Emily Picton had a best time in the 25m freestyle and Rachel Buxton had a first place in the 25m backstroke.

In the nine and under boys and girls, Jack Smallwood swam the 25m butterfly for the first time and came second and had a best time in the 25m breaststroke.

Toby Fear had a best time and first place in the 25m backstroke while Xavier Johnson had a best time in the 25m freestyle.

Ellen Lupton had a best time in the 25m breaststroke and backstroke.

The last race, The Cannon, consisting of four girls and boys, with one from each age group, was very exciting.

The swimmers were Josie Dollery, Emily Picton, Abbie Connick, Rachel Champion, Toby Fear, Morgan Rose, Charlie Attwood, and Alex Plume and it was won in the end by Burnham.

Final results: Burnham-on-Sea (188); Backwell (177); Bristol Henleaze (175); Clevedon (134); Bishopsworth (82).

Special thanks also go to Catherine Lodge, who gave confidence to the younger swimmers and helped without being asked, as well as captains Rachel Champion and Alex Plume.

The Burnham Swim and Sports Academy were thanked for all the help given to the club for such an important gala for their younger swimmers - Claire Vickery, Dan Bartlett, Martin Rogers and Andy Pusill.
