BURNHAM moved into the final of the league cup, with a strong team performance.

In the first half, Burnham had to weather strong attacks from the away team, but the back four of Wayne Croucher, Keiran Franklin, Ollie Taylor and Steve Worthington defended solidly.

However 16-year-old Jon Dibble, playing his first senior game in goal, had to make two outstanding saves to keep the score at 0-0 at half-time.

In the second half, Burnham settled down to playing their attacking game and Joe Selway opened the scoring, after tapping in a shot by Alec Wilkins that was parried by the keeper.

Selway then doubled the lead quickly after and then went on to complete his first ever senior hat-trick.

Wide players Owen Jandrell and Mike Burnell played really well and never gave Portishead’s full-backs a minute’s peace.

Taylor, Jandrell and Wilkins were replaced by Anthony Garrett, Joe Rossiter and Dave Worthington before the midfield pair of Tom Penfold and Aaron Hardwidge both capped off great performances with excellent finishes to complete the final score.

Afterwards, Burnham manager John Lane said: “This is an early reward for the players after playing a good first half to the season with some very hard fought games.

“The players are now starting to gel as a team and this is the key to the success for us.”

With eight league games left, Burnham need six more points to seal promotion.
