UNITED were knocked out of the Somerset Senior Cup on Saturday when they travelled to take on Bristol side Ashton United.
The management decided the cup was not a priority so they took the opportunity to rest some players, strengthen the reserves and integrate some youth and so they gave a debut to 16-year-old Nathan Bishop and also took the promising Jack Hirons.
It was an evenly-fought game with Burnham just edging the first half and Ashton the second, the eventual winning goal coming from the spot for Ashton in the second half after Powell handled the ball in the area.
There was some controversy during the first half of this fixture when Ashton United made a pass back to their goalkeeper and he picked it up, the referee correctly awarded an indirect free to Burnham United. Burnham appeared to have scored through Craig Hirons from the free-kick and were ready to kick-off again but the referee changed his decision and the game slipped away from the visitors.
Manager Ashley Plant said: “We approach every game wanting to win it, however we are happy with our decision to leave certain players out and the performances of Nathan Bishop was a real bonus. Overall, I’m not too disappointed to be out of the cup.”
Man of the match (sponsored by Fusion Leisure Centre): Bidgood.
United: Lamb, Powell, Cannard, Bidgood, Bishop, Mylum, C Hirons, Whitfield, Leaf (J Hirons), Scott (Hicks), Keirle.
l UNITED face Larkhall Athletic Reserves away on Saturday for a 3pm kick-off.
