A chilly Californian night didn't halt a succession of stars in glamorous gowns - including Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence - parading down the red carpet at the 2013 Golden Globes.

Giant heat lamps were dotted along the red carpet to stop the shivers of the big names from film and television as they arrived for the awards ceremony.

Zero Dark Thirty actress Jessica Chastain stood out in her seafoam Calvin Klein gown with plunging neckline, while acting rival Naomi Watts went for a backless Zac Posen dress.

Silver Linings Playbook star Jennifer Lawrence was one of many who opted to brighten up the cool night with a splash of red in Dior, as was Homeland actress Claire Danes, who showed off an amazingly slim post-baby figure in her red Versace gown.

Birthday girl Julia Louis-Dreyfus said on E! that she hadn't been over-indulging so she could get into her Vera Wang layered lace and tulle gown.

The Veep star said: "I had a little tiny piece of cake that was this big. This is a corset you can't mess around."

Smash star Katharine McPhee turned heads in a daring black high-slit gown with a plunging V-neck by Olivier Theyskens for Theory.

Speaking about her frock, Katharine said: "I wanted to do something sexy. Last year I did something flirty and pretty and sweet."

She said the low temperatures weren't really an issue: "I'm so excited to be here that I'm not cold at all."

Amanda Seyfried said she had been picking up tips on how to pose on the red carpet from her Les Miserables co-star Anne Hathaway. Wearing a pale lace Givenchy gown, Amanda told Ryan Seacrest: "Apparently I'm supposed to move my leg like this. I learnt from Anne Hathaway, she's a really good poser and I've been studying her."
