Barton battled nightmares, insomnia
Mischa Barton has opened up about her battle with nightmares and insomnia.
The former OC star told the Daily Mirror that she has suffered from sleep issues for years and that it led to anxiety and has affected her work.
She said: "I was in Lawn Dogs, my first movie, aged 10 in 1997, followed by an appearance in Notting Hill as a 12-year-old in 1999. When I was working on films at that age, I'd use a huge amount of energy and I'd be exhausted by the time I was done. I also had to travel a lot, so with my problems at night it would take me days to catch up on sleep."
She went on: "I have gone entire nights with almost no sleep, although that's pretty rare and it's usually the night before I've got something really big.
"At these times I tend to overanalyse everything - from what lines I'll be saying to what the camera angles might be and what's going to happen first."
She added: " Sometimes it's been physically difficult to stay awake and alert on set during filming and people have had to wake me for the next scene."
Mischa, 27, says things have improved as she has got older and she sometimes uses a light sleep aid called Bonuit, which is a herbal remedy.
The actress has had some tough times - she was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in 2007 and in 2009 was involuntarily admitted to a psychiatric ward - but said she feels "different" now.
"But are those times behind me for ever? I'd never say that I won't go through any trying times again. That would be a silly thing to say," she said.
"It's not possible that I could rule out having any difficulties in my life because then I'd be setting myself up for disaster. B ut I do feel very far away from those moments and I feel like I've grown up a lot since then and am able to assess myself now."
