Directing was great for Bateman

Jason Bateman has revealed the hardest thing about directing was trying to contain his enthusiasm.

The Arrested Development star makes his directorial film debut with dark comedy Bad Words, which he also stars in as adult spelling bee competitor Guy Trilby.

"The hardest part was, for me, trying to contain how much I loved it. It's just the greatest experience of my life," he said a t the film's Los Angeles premiere.

Jason, who walked up the red carpet with wife Amanda Anka and co-stars Kathryn Hahn, Ben Falcone and Judith Hoag, said he had always wanted to follow in his father Kent's footsteps and direct a film.

Jason, who also produced Bad Words, previously took the reins on episodes of TV shows Arrested Development and Family Matters.

"It's a very complicated process to make a movie, and it's something that I always wanted to challenge myself with. This is a sense of humour that I feel is close to mine. It's a small film - I didn't want to bite off more than I could chew," he added.

"I was excited to play the lead role after the first couple of guys told me they weren't interested, so it seemed like a real big thing to take on. And I like work."

Bad Words follows Guy as he dodges a loophole in the rules to enter a national spelling competition for children.

The 45-year-old father-of-two admitted he wouldn't make a great spelling bee competitor, saying: " I was in one and lost early. I forgot the 'w' in an answer. I'm not a bright person."

Katherine added: " I was never a spelling bee competitor, and I will tell you, I probably would not have been a gifted one. I think I need to write it out!"
