George Clooney's mother has said she "couldn't be happier" about the Hollywood star's engagement to human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin.
Gravity star George was reported to have popped the question and London-based barrister Amal, 36, was spotted wearing a large ring as she accompanied him to a dinner with Cindy Crawford and Edward Norton at a Californian restaurant.
Now his mum Nina has apparently confirmed her son's good news and given her blessing to the love of the star's life.
Speaking to MailOnline, she said: "We weren't at all surprised when they told us they were engaged, and we couldn't be happier for them.
"On an intellectual level, they are equals. That is very important to him. Amal's world couldn't be more different from the Hollywood lifestyle. She's a lawyer, she is brilliant, she is a very bright woman and at the very top of her career."
She added: "They also share a sense of fun, a sense of humour and they are both very caring people."
Amal's colleagues at Doughty Street Chambers have praised the "utterly wonderful" lawyer and offered their congratulations.
The Oxford-educated legal eagle, who has represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, has been described as a "passionate defender of human rights".
Eminent lawyer Geoffrey Robertson, who is the joint head of chambers, said: "Amal Alamuddin is a brilliant and passionate defender of human rights who has put in the enormously hard work necessary to improving them. She is respected and admired by all her colleagues."
Chief executive Robin Jackson said: "Amal has been utterly wonderful since she arrived in Chambers. She brings a bright light to everything she is involved in, and I am so delighted at her happy news."
Fluent French and Arabic speaker Amal is said to have spent time with 52-year-old George in New York, Tanzania and the Seychelles. The actor was previously married to actress Talia Balsam and has said that he would never marry again, although he has dated a string of beautiful women including Lisa Snowdon, Stacy Keibler and Elisabetta Canalis.
As recently as 2012 his sister Adelia Zeidler said: "George will probably not get married. He decided that he could have the career or he could have a family."
