Arnie: My mission was always movies

Burnham and Highbridge Weekly News: Arnold Schwarzenegger always planned to return to the bright lights of Hollywood Arnold Schwarzenegger always planned to return to the bright lights of Hollywood

Arnold Schwarzenegger has insisted he didn't need to be enticed back to acting.

The 66-year-old Terminator star "retired" from Hollywood in 2003 to run for Governor of California and was elected and held the position for two terms. He eased himself back into acting with cameos in friend Sylvester Stallone's franchise starring action heroes, The Expendables, and next stars in gory new revenge thriller Sabotage.

"It was not so much enticing back to acting. My mission was that I'm gonna step out of acting, I'm gonna become Governor of California, I'm gonna run for that office because I feel I've better answers in making the state a better state and a better place to live. And that is why I did that job," he explained, launching into a long and defiant speech.

"But I always knew that I'm going to go after that back to acting, because I don't want to be a career politician after I'm Governor - run for Senate or for Congress or anything like this.

"That's not what my goal was when I was a kid. My goal was to be a body-building champion, to get into movies, to play action movies, to be a leading man.

"Then to give back to the community as much as I can and get involved in the Special Olympics and after-school programmes and all this, which eventually then led to becoming Governor of California."

He continued: "To be a public servant, it was the greatest honour for me, the greatest pleasure, to have the trust of the people and to work on behalf of the people and then to go back again and continue my regular job, the thing that I enjoy."

:: Sabotage is released in cinemas on Wednesday May 7.
