Victoria and David Beckham and Sean Penn and Charlize Theron stepped out in co-ordinating outfits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala in New York.

Victoria wore a white column dress from her own collection, while David wore a monochrome suit by Ralph Lauren, as they arrived at the glitzy event.

"So much fun tonight at the #MetGala Thank u team VB, amazing dress!!! I love u all," the Spice Girl tweeted.

Charlize looked elegant in a strapless Dior Haute Couture gown with navy and black satin embellishment, which she teamed with a black wool jacket and clutch all by Dior, as Sean picked a black tuxedo and white shirt.

Jay Z, in a white jacket and black tux trousers by Givenchy Haute Couture, acted the gentleman when wife Beyonce - in a crystal-studded custom gown by Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci - dropped her ring, and jokingly staged a mock proposal for the cameras by putting the gem back on her finger.

Hugh Jackman and his wife Deborra-Lee Furness also picked matching black and white ensembles, while Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively both wore Gucci.

Kim Kardashian, who arrived arm-in-arm with Kanye West, flashed her pins in a teal Lanvin dress, as Johnny Depp, in Ralph Lauren and sporting a walking stick, accompanied fiancee Amber Heard, who wore a floor-length lace number by Giambattista Valli Haute Couture.

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka sported matching cropped tuxedos with elongated tails and cummerbands by Thom Browne.

Sarah Silverman and Michael Sheen made their red carpet debut as a couple at the bash, with the Masters Of Sex star in a black-and-white tux and the comic actress in a deep red gown.

The 2014 Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala, titled Charles James: Beyond Fashion, was co-hosted by Vogue editor Anna Wintour with Bradley Cooper and Sarah Jessica Parker.
