Mark Wahlberg has opened up about fatherhood and his own turbulent childhood.

The Hollywood star, 43, grew up in a tough Boston neighbourhood and was already known to police and using drugs by the age of 13.

The Transformers: Age Of Extinction actor now has four young children of his own with ex-model Rhea Durham and is able to give his family a completely different life to the one he had growing up.

He told Esquire that he planned to take his eldest children with him to watch him undergo the painful procedures to remove his last tattoos to put them off ever getting the inkings themselves.

He said of being a father: "I think the most important thing is to always be involved in every aspect of their life. To give them enough trust that they can share things with you. I don't want them to be terrified of me, you know?

But. according to Mail Online, he added: "I worry that maybe they'll have a sense of entitlement. You don't wanna give your kids everything without giving them the tools to be great people."

Mark also told how he obtained his high school diploma in 2013 so as to set a good example for his children, saying: " I can't tell my kids to go to school and get an education if I don't have a diploma. They'd start thinking, 'why do we need to go? You didn't go and you turned out all right'."

He said sharing a room and bunk beds with his brothers "was great at times and pretty traumatic at times when you were really young. You had brothers that were teenagers and they were doing s*** that teenagers do, and you don't understand what it is or why they're doing it."

But he told the magazine: "I think, for the most part, I had a pretty good childhood. It wasn't until we got older that we realised we didn't have what a lot of other people had."
