Guy Pearce has revealed that he used to take on his Lawless co-star Tom Hardy during breaks - by playing Angry Birds.

The Australian actor, who plays Special Agent Charlie Rakes in John Hillcoat and Nick Cave's Prohibition-era film, said the pair would chill out by playing games in between takes.

"We were playing these two angry characters and in between takes we were sitting there playing Angry Birds," he said.

"The funny thing is, particularly when you work on something that has some violence in it, you actually find a lighter, more humorous way of connecting with each other, I suppose, as a counter. And you do it without thinking about it."

Former Neighbours star Guy, who has also appeared in Christopher Nolan's Memento, The King's Speech and Prometheus, admitted that he is making the most of the big-screen opportunities heading his way.

"I had a bit of a meltdown when I was about 30 just from doing too much work and not having breaks in between. I took a year off and had a big think about it and during that time I realised that yes, this is what I want to do," he said.

"I'd been doing it since I was really young, and I was still working and making decisions based on that decision as an eight-year-old, so I needed to step back from that. I could see all sorts of things that I hadn't been able to see before."

Lawless, which also stars Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska, is in cinemas now.
