FILM crews have returned to Burnham-on-Sea for a new Channel 4 drama series about assisted suicide.

Filming for the six-part series, called Truelove, restarted in Clevedon on May 17 after Julie Walters pulled out due to a problem with her back.

The series was originally shot in May 2022 in Burnham, Berrow and Brean, when production vehicles were spotted in Pier Street car park.

The series will now star Lindsay Duncan and features Downton Abbey actor Sue Johnston.

There will be film crews in Burnham again today (Monday, July 24), according to Somerset Council's roadworks and travel website.

A diversion route will be in place until 10pm on the Esplanade.

The council's website says: “Production company filming around the roundabout to the north of Esplanade.

“All day closure to through traffic. Pedestrian and emergency access maintained.”

Duncan will play the part of Phil, an ex-senior police chief enjoying a comfortable but boring retirement.

The three-time BAFTA nominee said: “When I read the Truelove scripts, I knew I wanted to be involved.

“I say involved because the obvious thing is that Phil is a great part – an intelligent, tough and complex woman – but also I want to be a part of this project.

“It’s so well written, exploring what we face when age becomes a factor. How do we want to live, die and love with the remaining years?

“It tells a compelling story with humanity and very dark humour. The cast is terrific. It’s original and ambitious.

“Excited is an overused word in this context, but I really am.”

Caroline Hollick, Channel 4 Head of Drama, said: “Truelove is a unique, poignant and darkly funny series which deals with big themes around regrets at the paths not taken, quality of life and serious illness.

“Beautifully written and with actors of the calibre of Lindsay Duncan and Clarke Peters playing the leads, Truelove is an exciting addition to Channel 4’s upcoming portfolio of dramas.

“I can’t wait to see the series come to life.”
