A GROUP of boxers left the ring and behind and jumped on their bikes to raise money to help ensure the survival of their club.

The Kind Alfred Amateur Boxing Club was facing an uphill struggle to survive after being forced to give up its training grounds on the Moorlands estate because of lack of funds.

August 11, 1995

PLANS were laid this week for what was set to be the area's biggest-ever free rock concert.

Lone Sharkz musician Paul Hewlett teamed up with Burnham Area Round Table and the Local Emergency Services charity fund-raisers to stage the event on Burnham beach, near the head of the public slipway, on Saturday, September 16.

Burnham and Highbridge Town Council voted by a majority on Monday night to give the planned concert its support.

25 YEARS AGO

August 10, 1990

INSTRUCTIONS were to go out to Burnham hospital and local doctors to monitor patients for the after effects of the phosphorous pentoxide cloud which drifted through Burnham, Berrow and Brean at the weekend.

The exercise was part of a special register being set up by hospitals and surgeries throughout Somerset and Avon following the cloud, caused by a major fire at the chemical plant of Albright and Wilson in Portishead.
