A MULTI-MILLION pound housing development could be on its way to West Huntspill after the ambitious project was officially revealed this week.

A request for outline planning consent was submitted to Sedgemoor District Council on Wednesday (June 27) asking permission to build 21 homes on land at Alstone Lane.

If the scheme went ahead the make-up of the houses would see a selection of three to five bedroom houses on the two-acre site..

The idea is the brainchild of Bath-based Charlcombe Estates, who told the Weekly News it had wanted to press on in the area for some time now with a housing development.

Managing director Alastair Gibson said: "It's been a year in the pipeline and there have been other applications.

"We have addressed all the reasons for refusals of the previous applications.

"We are proposing some highway improvements, providing a footpath.

"I think overall there is a need for housing there and talking to council housing officers there is a need and demand for homes."

District council ward member for West Huntspill Cllr Jane Moreton said the development was planned for a site of archaeological interest and it was turned down last time.

"I certainly will not be supporting it, I know there is a need for rural housing but certainly not to this extent," she said.

"Local view is very important to how I respond to it.

"We need to keep our villages alive but not with something of this size - and not building on a green field sites in the village."
