PLANS to convert a group of offices into flats have been turned down by town councillors.
Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Town council's planning committee voted unanimously against the plans which would see the offices located on Church Street in Highbridge turned into four flats while the commercial use of the ground floor will be retained.
Cllr Bill Hancock said: "There is always going to be a need for offices in Highbridge.
"Once they are gone, they are gone forever.
"I would prefer for them to stay for another six to twelve months to see if there is any demand for the space."
Councillors said they were concerned that the plans would see too many flats going into the space.
Cllr Louise Parkin said: "We have to be consistent with what we approve.
"Four flats is too much to put in that space."
Cllr Peter Burridge Clayton said: "The question that needs to be asked is what would the building be used for if not filled by offices, it would be just left abandoned I think."
Cllr John Parkes added that he was concerned about the amount of flats being developed in Highbridge.
"I do think this is yet another example of the over development of Highbridge.
"This is yet another example of where business accomodation could be lost to flats."
Councillors voted unanimously against the plans but the final decision will rest with Sedgemoor District Council.
