PEOPLE power has helped pulverise a bid to scrap Sedgemoor District Council in favour of a super size authority.

At 1pm today (Wednesday) news staff were hoping to hear finally filtered through - that Somerset County Council's unitary bid was over.

In the end the plans were defeated miles away in London after the Department for Communities and Local Government said no to the idea.

The Weekly News' sister paper the Mercury launched its Save Our Sedgemoor campaign on May 22 after it became clear people in the town wanted to keep their district council.

A poll across Somerset carried on the proposals revealed 82% were against them and Councillor Duncan McGinty, leader of Sedgemoor District Council said he was pleased with this week's result.

"The Government has listened to the voice of the people," he said.

"When local residents voted overwhelmingly against unitary status in the recent county-wide referendum the county council ignored them.

"It is to the government's credit that the people's voice has now been heard."
