ANYONE offered a mattress for sale from a van in Devon or Somerset is being urged not to accept the offer - as the item may not be safe.

The Devon, Somerset and Torbay Trading Standards Service has warned residents to be on their guard against such sales, as the mattresses involved may be unsafe.

A spokesman for the service said: "We have had reports of people selling mattresses from vans across Devon and Somerset.

"These mattresses may be unsafe and could fail to comply with furniture flammability regulations.

"We believe the sellers are not providing buyers with adequate cancellation notices or paperwork.

"If you are approached and offered goods, we recommend you decline the opportunity to purchase, as the items may be unsafe and not meet required safety standards.

"If you wish to buy such items, use reputable businesses who provide paperwork including a legitimate address and come recommended."
