A CAR park at a Burnham-on-Sea church will be closed for seven days while major refurbishment works are carried out.

The car park at Our Lady and the English Martyrs Church on Highbridge Road will be closed from September 23 until September 30 so it can be flattened and re-tarmacked.

The work is being funded by a grant from the Viridor Credits Landfill Community Fund.

The site has not been re-laid for more than 30 years and has a number of potholes on it.

Parents of pupils at St Joseph’s School are the main users of the car park and they have also contributed to the costs of the work.

A spokesman for the church, said: “The car park, which is private, will be closed from the afternoon of Sunday, September 23 until Sunday, September 30.

"This will cause some disruption at school opening and closing times, but unfortunately the work could not be carried out in holiday time.

"The footpath, from Highbridge Road to Marine Drive, will be closed from Wednesday until Friday of that week.”
