AN official Christmas light switch-on event will be held in the town for the first time since 2015.

Taunton Deane Borough Council has confirmed an event will go ahead this year, after two Christmases with no light-on.

The last event was held in the town in 2015 when Johnny Kingdom, who recently passed away, was the star guest.

Official details are yet to be released about the 2018 event, but the council has confirmed it will take place on Sunday, November 25.

A TDBC spokesperson said: “The council is planning a day of events culminating in the switch on of the Christmas tree lights on Sunday November 25.

"Final details have yet to be signed off but there will be fairground rides, food and entertainment from 10am through to 8pm.

"The Mayor of Taunton Deane, Cllr Catherine Herbert, will officially turn on the lights on the traditional tree outside the Market House at 6.30pm.”

For the previous two years the council has forgone an official event in favour of smaller activities happening in the run up to Christmas. The lights were still switched on but without the festive fanfare.
