A TEAM of kind volunteers made light work of some crucial maintenance jobs at Secret World Wildlife Rescue after they visited the charity for a corporate volunteer day.

Staff at the 26-year old East Huntspill wildlife charity based has thanked staff AmcoGiffen in Highbridge after they donated their time and expertise to the charity for free.

Fuelled by free chips from Rob’s Fish Bar in Highbridge, staff from the engineering company spent the day painting walls and floors, dismantling a marquee and moving heavy furniture.

Chris Gunning, senior works manager at AmcoGiffen, said: “It was great to see the amazing work the charity does to rehabilitate helpless wildlife at first hand.

“It’s been worthwhile for the team to be able to give their time to such a deserving cause.

"We’re used to working in challenging circumstances within the rail environment and often find ourselves working against the clock.

“By adopting the same approach, we managed to get lots done for the charity to help them over the busy winter period. The chips and endless supply of beverages were greatly appreciated.”

As well as donating their expertise for free the engineering company also paid for anti-slip paint for the floor of the charity's rehabilitation unit.

Samantha Hannay, Head of External Relations at Secret World, said: “We are very lucky to have teams of professional volunteers who choose to spend their volunteer days at our centre.

“We have a lot of winter maintenance work to do before an expected influx of orphans in the spring.

“The team from AmcoGiffen has proved to be an enormous help and we’re thrilled that so many major jobs were completed. A huge thank you must go to Rob’s Fish Bar which provided the team with a free supply of chips.”

The charity said it is currently looking businesses in Somerset to help them with wood preservation for their animal enclosures, painting the Secret World charity shop, stocktaking, landscaping around the aviaries and digging and reseeding the grounds around their pre-release pens.
