Somerset Premier
Burnham-on-Sea 91, Hornets 2nds 0

AFTER the previous week’s epic 25-24 win over Nailsea & Backwell, Burnham swept aside Hornets 2nds at The Pit on Saturday.

In front of a good home crowd, despite the wind and rain, a drive from the forwards set up Stef Pierce to score the opening try, converted by Tim Piper.

The Stags continued on the front foot, Ryan Beard’s break allowing the ball to be recycled for Sam Lewis to add a second converted try.

The hosts’ quick thinking and quick passing was too much for Hornets, as tries from Ryan Rossiter and scrum-half Lewis, who completed a rapid hat-trick, made it 29-0.

The impressive Birkan Gunduz scored just before the break to make it 34-0 at half time.

Burnham were unrelenting after the interval, with Ash Cutter and Sam Wall getting themselves on the scoresheet.

With the visitors down to 14 men, Thomas Harris, Adam Peters, Beard, Ross McKechan (2), Henry Bigwood and Wall (2) completed the 15-try rout.

Skipper Ross McKechan said: “It was a dominant performance and it’s the biggest win we’ve had in my eight years here.

“We kept going and they couldn’t handle it.

“This Saturday will be a tougher challenge but it’s important we finish the year with a win.”

Burnham, now third in the table (just one point behind Avon in second), go to 10th-placed St Bernadettes Old Boys on Saturday for their final game of 2018.

BURNHAM-ON-SEA 2nds picked up two valuable, if very unusual, away points on Saturday.

They drew 0-0 at Martock, which may not have offered much for the spectators but does keep Burnham clear of the Somerset 2 South dropzone, with Martock, Wiveliscombe 2nds and Bridgwater & Albions 3rds below them.

This coming Saturday brings the 2nd XV’s last game of 2018, at home to third-placed Winscombe 2nds (ko 2.15pm).
