Division 1
Wells City Reserves 1, Burnham United 0

BURNHAM United are back in relegation danger after a damaging defeat to fellow strugglers Wells City Reserves on Saturday.

United had given themselves a huge boost with a 1-0 win over Yatton & Cleeve United the previous weekend, but this result puts them back to square one in the battle to beat the drop from Division 1.

Reece Cornish scored the only goal of the game for Wells, who put in some backs-to-the-wall defending to keep the clean sheet.

The visitors’ finishing, by contrast, left a lot to be desired, and both teams are now level on seven points near the bottom of the division, with only Long Ashton (four points) below them.

United are back in action this Saturday (ko 2pm), away to fifth-placed Winscombe, while Wells travel to Long Ashton.

Somerset Women’s League
Burnham United Ladies 1, Bishops Lydeard Reserves 5

BURNHAM United Ladies suffered a second straight defeat on Sunday, as third-placed Bishops Lydeard Reserves proved too strong at Cassis Close.

Vanessa Brill netted for the hosts, who trailed 2-1 at half time, before three second-half goals sealed it for the away side.

Lydeard’s goalscorers were Sophie Lewis, Nicola Brown, Amber Guy-Kemp, Ellen Broadway and Holly Newstead.

That leaves Burnham in fifth spot, level on 18 points with fourth-placed Portishead Reserves.

Burnham Ladies will hope for a better result on home turf this coming Sunday (ko 2pm), as they entertain Ilminster Town Reserves, who sit eighth, for their last fixture of 2018.

ASIDE from the first team, there were two other Burnham United teams in action on Saturday.

The Reserves squeezed past bottom side Cutters Friday, 2-1, in Division 3 of the Somerset County League.

Jaden Watts and Shaun Lismore won it for the hosts, with Connor Murray replying.

This Saturday sees Burnham, eighth in the standings, host seventh-placed Winscombe Reserves (ko 2pm).

Burnham United A saw their six-game winning streak ended by Lodway in Division 3 of the Weston-super-Mare & District League on Saturday.

Alex Plume and Cain Smith were on target for the home side, but Andrew Law-Smith (2), Thomas Metcalfe and Kieron Parkhouse secured a 4-2 victory for Lodway.

Burnham A will look to bounce back at home to Selkirk United on Saturday (ko 2pm).

Burnham United’s Under-18s overcame Falcons 5-4 in tough conditions away from home on Sunday.

Burnham had won the reverse fixture 10-3 the week before, but only just got the victory this time around, thanks to Elliot Keen (2), Cain Smith, Max Feasey and Ewan Murdoch’s goals.

Burnham are level at the top of the South Division with Bridgwater Wolves, although they have played three more games; this Sunday they are away to fifth-placed Minehead (ko 2pm).
