PLANS to revitalise an area of Taunton are moving ahead.

Two planning applications have been submitted from Taunton Deane Borough Council, to itself, for approval to replace Woolaway homes in North Taunton.

It was announced in September 2017 more than 100 homes in the north Taunton area needed to be improved.

In the Housing Defects Act 1984, Woolaway housing was designated as 'defective' - meaning they would deteriorate in the near future. Woolaway properties are made from concrete columns, beams and panels, and were used post-war as they could be built very quickly.

Taunton Deane Borough Council consulted with residents for a year to find the best solution and it was decided the 'defective' homes will be demolished and replaced.

One of the outline planning application deals with the replacement, refurbishment, and the building of additional homes, to provide up to 230 new properties between Lyngford Lane and Dorchester Road.

The second application is for phase one of the development, which involves the replacement of 26 Woolaway homes and the building of 21 additional homes and a community facility building. It involves land in Bodmin Road, Dorchester Road, Wells Close, Cambridge Terrace and Rochester Road.

Somerset County Gazette:

PLANS: Part of the planning, design and access statement for the redevelopment

A spokesman for the authority said: "The proposed scheme will provide 226 new build homes and refurbish 27 existing TDBC homes through a phased approach.

"There will be a net increase of 64 new homes as a result of the overall scheme.

"The proposed mix of homes has been largely informed by consultation feedback from the existing residents in the community and would provide a broader mix than the current situation, through the inclusion of 1 bedroom and 5 bedroom properties to meet local need.

"Any addition of units has been based on the current housing need set out in Homefinder Somerset."

TDBC residents who live at the site will be given the opportunity to return to one of the new homes at a 'social' rent level, while existing homeowners within the redevelopment will be discussing their options with the council.

Members of the public and view and comment on both applications on TDBC's website.

The outline application can be commented on online until January 25 and can be found by searching reference number 38/18/0467.
