THERE is heavy traffic on the M5 northbound near Bridgwater this afternoon (Friday, February, 22).

The delays are due to a vehicle fire and crash which happened at around 2.15pm between J24 Bridgwater South and J23 Bridgwater North.

Traffic was held in the area for some considerable time, and there are reports that the A38 through North Petherton is also very slow going.

As of 5.35pm there was still one lane closed and queuing traffic tailing back nearly as far as Taunton.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "Two fire engines from Bridgwater were sent to multiple reports of a vehicle on fire on the M5.

"Crews arrived on scene and confirmed there were two vehicles well alight. Crews got to work extinguishing the blaze using breathing apparatus and hose reel jets.

"Police also attended the scene. The incident happened in the third lane of the M5 and is likely to cause congestion in the area.

"Crews put the fire out and duty of care was left with the Police. Both vehicle were severely damaged, and the cause was deemed as accidental ignition."
