AN MP has praised the progress of multi-million pound works to redevelop a landmark Highbridge hotel.

Highbridge MP James Heappey met with Martin Hodgson, chief executive of the YMCA and John Perkins Construction on Friday (March 1) and was given a tour of the site where he was shown what each part of the building will be used for and how the YMCA plans to create a community space for local people.

The former hotel was severely damaged by fire in 2008 and also in 2011 before YMCA Somerset Coast took control of the site in 2014.

When the project is completed the former hotel will provide a community hub, cafe, sports hall and 23 homes for vulnerable young people.

Mr Heappey, said: “So much work has gone into this development and I think once completed everyone will be very proud.

"I am thrilled to come and see this today and can’t wait to come back and see it when it is all finished.”

The site is being managed by John Perkins Construction and the project is being funded by the YMCA, Sedgemoor District Council, and Homes England

Construction on the site is ongoing and YMCA Dulverton Group said they aim to have the project completed by late summer this year.

Martin Hodgson, chief executive of YMCA Dulverton Group, said the new hub will benefit the Highbridge community.

He said: “The accommodation will stand alongside current YMCA Dulverton Group locations, but will focus on young, single people who need support and will give them space for a better start in life.”

YMCA said the development has seen some reluctance from residents but say work carried out by John Perkins' Construction has eased any tensions.

Rupert Perkins, director of John Perkins Construction said: "We are doing everything we can to minimise disruption to neighbours and are building good relationships by explaining each stage of the development and keeping everyone informed.”
