A CHILD was hit by a car this morning at what one resident has described as an 'accident waiting to happen' junction.

The 10-year-old sustained minor injuries, police have said, as a result of the collision in Homesteads Road, Kempshott, at around 8.30am today (March 20).

South Central Ambulance Service added it sent an ambulance crew to the area and after initial assessment and treatment at the scene, the girl was then taken to Basingstoke hospital.

One nearby resident got in touch with The Gazette saying they felt it was a matter of time before an accident occurred in the area.

They said: "It has to be one of the most dangerous school crossings in Basingstoke. On Homesteads Road you have a crossing place where four roads meet - Homesteads, Old Down Close, Buttermere Drive and the rear access to shops.

"On top of that you have lorries delivering to Document Despatch and Tesco. At school pick-up and drop-off times you also have cars parked all over the road.

"This was an accident waiting to happen."

Councillor Rob Humby, executive member for environment and transport at Hampshire County Council, said: “I’m sorry to hear of this incident and hope the young person involved recovers quickly. Safety comes first, and we prioritise our resources where there is evidence that installing measures will bring about improvements, while taking into consideration numbers of pedestrians, traffic volumes and suitability of sites.

“We regularly analyse injury accident data to determine what interventions could be introduced to reduce the number of people injured on our roads.  We will be asking the Police for details of this incident and, together, with a study of the injury accident record for this area, will consider if any interventions could be put in place that would reduce casualties and improve road safety.”
