‘WE are pleased to have a new sports club at the hall but we want more people to use our facilities.”

Those are the words of Jane MacPherson, a trustee of the Morland Hall in Highbridge, who said she has ‘high hopes’ for the hall’s future as a new after-school club for young people is set to launch today (April 2).

The after-school club takes place outside the hall on Tuesday’s and is run by coaches from SPARC, a company which delivers physical activity in the heart of communities to reduce social isolation, improve physical and mental wellbeing and reduce crime and anti social behaviour.

Jane said it has been a busy few months for the hall’s trustees who have been working around the clock to get community groups to use the hall and she is excited about the new sports club.

She said: “Getting young people off their computers and mobile phones is a good thing for their health so we are really pleased that we have a new sports club at the hall.

“We have already run this club with SPARC before and it was hugely successful so when they approached us and said they wanted to do it again we were happy to have them.

“Their coaches do a great job at getting young people to exercise and they make the sessions fun for children.

“We are trying to get more clubs to use the hall as it is a great community facility. We are lucky enough to already have the Burnham and Highbridge Men’s Shed at the hall as well as a computer club and some fantastic members of the community who give up their time to help keep the hall going.

“But we would urge anyone who wants to use the hall to get in touch with us as we want to make the most of this facility.”

The club’s trustees are also working on a £1.5million plan which would see the Morland Community Hall in Pearce Drive torn down and replaced with an eco-friendly, energy efficient building equipped with modern facilities.

Jane said the plans are ‘progressing well’ and trustees are currently looking at getting grant funding to pay for the hall’s redevelopment.
