BERROW Beach has been awarded a Seaside Award from Keep Britain Tidy for the fifth year in a row.

The honour recognises the quality and diversity of England’s coastline and this summer Berrow Beach will be one of more than 100 beaches flying a Seaside award flag after meeting the highest standards for cleanliness, attractiveness and beach management.

A spokesman for Sedgemoor District Council, said: "Berrow joins the country’s very best beaches, from popular holiday spots to quiet, more hidden-away spots.

"What unites them all is knowing that they are clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards, as well as the tough international bathing water quality standards.

"Berrow Beach can provide a wonderful day out for the family.

"It is an exceptional beach with sand dunes, picnic areas, and both lifeguards and beach wardens providing safety cover and advice."

Burnham-on-Sea sadly missed out on receiving the accolade as the town has been told it cannot win an award due to its 'poor' bathing water quality classification from the EU.

A project is underway to clean-up Burnham beach and improve the sea water quality.

Allison Ogden-Newton, Keep Britain Tidy’s chief executive, said: “Visiting beaches with the Blue Flag or Seaside Award status means beach-goers can feel more relaxed in a setting that is environmentally considerate.

“We as individuals feel emotionally connected to the environment more than ever, with so many experiencing eco-anxiety. Keep Britain Tidy continues to push for more environmentally responsible beaches, where visitors needn’t feel this stress.

“We’re incredibly pleased to have even more winners this year than last, proving the great dedication of the beach staff. From environmental education for the local community and ensuring responsible beach use, to cleaning regimes and an increasing number of recycling facilities, it is a full-time commitment to create beaches worthy of the awards.

“Thanks to the Blue Flag and Seaside Awards, visitors can be reassured their destination is cared for and they will be able to help maintain the high standards of these awards thanks to their environmental initiatives.”
