BURNHAM-on-Sea and Highbridge Sea Cadets have thanked the fire service for their quick actions after a fire broke out in one of their units.

Two fire crews from Burnham-on-Sea and a fire engine and an aerial ladder platform from Bridgwater were called at 4.01pm on Sunday (May 19) following reports of of smoke issuing from the Sea Cadets Building in Cassis Close.

When firefighters arrived at the scene the incident commander found smoke coming from a shipping container.

Firefighters entered the premises using hydraulic cutting equipment and once they got in crews extinguished the fire using one hose reel jet and one safety jet.

The fire service said the fire was started by a barbecue in a neighbouring property that had dropped hot embers onto combustible material.

A spokesman for the sea cadets, said: "Thank you all those who called 101 or 999 this evening in response to the fire at the rear of the unit and particular thanks to the firefighters in Burnham who put it out.

"Initial reports suggest water and smoke damage to a storage container which appear to be relatively easily resolved.

"The unit chairman and I would like to thank those volunteers and supporters who assisted with the initial reports and subsequently making the site secure."
